John 2 describes a very important time in scripture! Jesus’s first miracle. Although it was not as large scale as raising from the dead or feeding the five thousand we can learn a lot about Jesus from this miracle.
First thing is the setting. Jesus, who is the creator and sustainer of all things, takes the time to go to a wedding with his mother and the disciples. This is a great example of Jesus’s emphasis on community throughout his ministry.
John 2:11 says, “ This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.”
Whether he was attending a wedding or just traveling from town to town you always see Jesus take the time to fellowship and minister to those around him. The other important thing to learn from this story is not from Jesus, but from Mary. Lots of confusion surrounded Jesus throughout his ministry because Jesus’ path to the cross was not the path even his closest friends, the disciples, expected.
However throughout Jesus’ life and even before he was born Mary’s faith is nothing short of amazing. From a teenager who was told by an angel that she would give birth to God’s son, to a grieving mother that finds her son risen from the dead; Mary’s faith is constant and unwavering.
Think about the hard things we go through in life. If we had just a fraction of Mary’s faith imagine what impact that would have.
