I was sick recently and a thought kept popping up in my head. #relatablemoment
“God, if you could just make me better I will definitely pray/read/go to church more.”
Have you had this thought? Deep in the middle of the flu you pray that God will take this awful feeling and sore body away from you?
You begin to see other people who are sick or broken in some way and you empathize in a way you couldn’t when you are healthy and “normal.”
The thing is, it’s so easy to find God when we can’t rely on ourselves. Those times of brokenness and despair make God the natural source for healing and restoration, but what about when you are “fine?”
God doesn’t just want our sick and broken bodies. He loves us and He cares about us and I genuinely believe that God wishes for everyone to be healed and free from our brokenness… But we can’t use our times of independence or health as a way to fall from God.
It’s so easy though isn’t it? “Out of sight, out of mind,” is a phrase you hear sometimes and that is exactly the case here. Why do I want God if I don’t even need Him? This is a matter once again of eternal perspective.
We need God’s love. Let me repeat that. We. Need. God’s. Love.
Don’t you realize without it we would suffer an eternity in Hell?
But it’s more than that. That should be the last reason we follow God. The first reason is that He makes us whole. He brings the sick to health, the dead to life.
We are dead without Christ. Only His love can save us from living in death and eternal brokenness.
We have to recognize this fact first: We are dead in our transgressions. We live in sin.
“But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, ‘Why does he eat with such scum?’
When Jesus heard this, he told them, ‘Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.’” Mark 2:16-17
We are constantly broken and constantly sick until we have God and can live our lives to the fullest.
Once we know that we are sinners (which is so easy because we live in such a sinful broken world), we must truly believe that Christ is our Savior. Only He can save us from Hell and life without love, without peace and without the yearning for our true Father.
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
“It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
So once we see this incredible fact: He is our Lord and protector, eternal Savior and Creator… we come to the next realization.
We have messed up big time. Our lives until this very moment have lived in sin and selfishness and fear and shame and deceit and lies and we can’t do this anymore.
It’s exhausting and we need to get rid of all of that sin holding us down. We need to get rid of the things that keep us sick.
We do that by telling God that we have messed up. We tell Him how wrong it has been to live this life of brokenness and sin… And He will instantly forgive you, there is no downtime here.
“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” 1 John 1:9
His gift is grace and it is completely free.
So maybe you’ve heard all of that and yeah, maybe I went on a tangent, but that above us right there is literally the best news in the entire world. Better than finding 5 bucks, better than that cute girl saying yes to your timid request to go to the dance, better than not owing money on your taxes, or finally paying off that second mortgage.
Jesus is completely better than anything else this world has to offer us, and it’s free. His love, His mercy, His grace, His sacrifice: all free.
Are you sick? Do you need healing? Have you felt Christ in your life recently?
Maybe it’s about time to lay it all at the feet of Jesus.
Dear Lord, hear us today because we are all sick.
Show us our brokenness, and give us the desire and the courage to seek You as we find help. Help us admit this sin from there realize that only You can save us. We believe in You God, we believe You did the unimaginable when You sent Your only son, Jesus to wash away all of our sins and iniquities. You are the one true God and without You, we would all surely perish. Give us faith and through that, Your perfect love.
We have fallen, we aren’t perfect. We’re the farthest from it and nothing but You can change that.
Give us the courage to admit our wrongs, to show You our deepest darkest failures and temptations because You can wipe us clean of all of this Father. More than anything else, show us Your love in a way we have never seen before. We love You. Amen.
